FAQs
What is the sanding prep?
The entire surface of the part should be sanded with 400 grit. A maroon scuff pad can be used for surfaces that cannot be reached with a random orbital sander (DA)
Should I mix Plastic Topcoat RTS by volume or weight?
Both ways are fine, but since most body shops have access to a scale measuring by weight would be easier.
‣ Weight = 100g of “Part A” to 33g of “Part B”
‣ Volume by a calibrated mix cup = 3:1 from the cup calibrations
Why am I getting a glossier result than I would like?
This is caused from by
‣ Applying the product from a distance too close to the part
‣ Overapplying the product.
Do I have to reduce the Plastic Primer?
It is not needed, but it does help for consistency in spraying and wetting of the parts surface.
Can any of the coatings be force dried with heat or infrared?
○ Air dry for each (Adhesion Promoter, Plastic Primer and Plastic Topcoat)
‣ Yes, parts can be air dried
• Adhesion Promoter: 20 minutes required
• Plastic Primer: 15 – 30 minutes until product does not thumb print
• Plastic Topcoat: 4 hours for full dry
○ Low Bake for each (Adhesion Promoter, Plastic Primer and Plastic Topcoat)
‣ Yes, parts can be low baked at 100° – 120°
• Adhesion Promoter: Do not Low Bake
• Plastic Primer: 15 to 20 minutes until product does not thumb print
• Plastic Topcoat: 30 – 45 minutes, reduces dry time to 30 – 45 min.
○ High Bake for each (Adhesion Promoter, Plastic Primer and Plastic Topcoat)
‣ Yes, parts can be high baked at 120° – 140°
• Adhesion Promoter: Do not High Bake
• Plastic Primer: 15 – 20 minutes until product does not thumb print
• Plastic Topcoat: 30-40 minutes
○ IR for each (Adhesion Promoter, Plastic Primer and Plastic Topcoat)
‣ No, IR is not an option
What is the pot life for activated Plastic Topcoat?
Pot life is 1 hour
What is the shelf life for unopened products?
‣ 4P-10-014 – Plastic Topcoat – 3 years
‣ 4P-10-034 – Plastic Primer – 3 years
‣ 4P-10-044 – Texture Activator – 3 years
‣ 4P-10-053 – Plastic Adhesion Promoter – 3 years
What is the usable life for opened products?
‣ 4P-10-053 – The aerosol is usable until empty or up to 3 years, if the stem is flushed between uses.
‣ 4P-10-024/4P-10-034/4P-10-044 – Opened product is good until empty or up to 3 years, if the following is followed:
• The lid is placed back on the container and sealed immediately after product use.
• Viscosity is deemed stable and not rising. Rising viscosity would indicate a poor seal and product may be compromised.
• Not replacing the lid at all would cause the product to become unusable in a very short period of time.
What is the process for making a repair in freshly painted Plastic Topcoat?
‣ Must either utilize high bake option or air dry to cure product
• High bake would be for 30 – 40 minutes and then cool down to work on
• Air dry would require overnight to allow for curing before working on part.
‣ Wipe part down with cleaning solvent to eliminate any contaminants.
‣ Sand part with red scuff pad
‣ Reclean part with cleaning solvent to eliminate sanding residue
‣ If cut through to bare part reapply primer and allow to flash until primer no longer finger prints.
• Sand primer to feather into part
• If cut through is very small priming may not be needed
• If primed and sanded, then rewipe part to remove sanding residue
‣ Apply two or three coats back-to-back with 12” gun distance from part
‣ Allow to dry based on method of drying, i.e., air, low bake, high bake.
